Dolphins are to many the very soul of the sea. Some believe that somewhere in time our evolutions may even have crossed.
Whatever the belief the fact remains, Dolphins are loved by many. A huge percentage of people in the UK, when asked what they would like to do before they die, stated that swimming with dolphins would be their choice.

On occasions dolphins from other pods will meet up and some wonderful interactions have been observed. Many of the dolphin pictures on our site specifically focus on dolphin populations in Cardigan Bay, Wales and the wild dolphins of Moray Firth, Scotland.
On numerous occasions we have been treated to spectacular acrobatics where these interactions have been taking place.
Dolphin calfs ( babies) are known to stay with their mother for anything up to 6 years. This childhood is time served learning all about how to fit into the social group known as the pod and feeding techniques.
Young male dolphins will often leave their own pods and form associations with other males.
Dolphins have a complex communication system which they use to identify and capture food and in order to talk to each other. Dolphins are highly intelligent and have one of the largest and most developed brains in the animal world. They use a form of sonar (clicks) to measure distances to food sources, to herd them and to aid in communication.
Dolphins communicate with each other by whistling. Each dolphin will develop its own signature whistle which, like a name, helps the individual identify other members of its pod and to be identified.
Dolphin intelligence is most visible when watching a pod of hungry dolphins awaiting an outflow of Salmon. The team effort placed on herding and catching fish is a spectacle to behold.
The way in which the dolphins will play with the fish, tossing it and catching it before finally devouring is another part of the entertainment in itself, though not perhaps for the salmon.
Although dolphins main animal predators are sharks, by far the worst predator of all is man. Through pollution, hunting and overfishing, use of nets that kill and maim dolphins and other marine mammals many dolphin species are critically endangered.
